Last night, an asteroid the length of 3 football fields flew by Earth at a rate of 7 miles per second.  The asteroid is called 2012 QG42.  A month ago, scientists weren’t even aware it existed.  Although last night’s flyby was harmless, it could pose problems in the future.  Apparently the close encounter wasn’t viewable by the naked eye or low-powered telescope.
